Greek Passport Photo Requirements: 4 x 6 cm, Grey Background and the New York Consulate

by Daniel Positioner 15 Oct 2026

Passport Photo Guide · Greece

A Greek passport photo is 4 by 6 cm, larger than a US photo, in color on a light background, preferably grey. Greek missions in the US ask for a photo no more than a month old, and a print must be on real photographic paper, not an inkjet or laser print.

Last checked against the Hellenic National Passport Center and the Greek missions in the USA on October 15, 2026.

Three ways to submit the photo abroad

Inside Greece, passport photos are now submitted digitally through myPhoto. Applications made abroad have three options: upload the photo to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' digital service for consular authorities, hand in a print on photographic paper, or have it taken at a consulate that has suitable photo equipment.

Applying at the Consulate General in New York

  • By appointment, in person. An appointment is required, and new passports and renewals must be applied for in person. The New York consulate serves Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
  • A recent photo. A color photo of 4 by 6 cm, no more than a month old, on a light background. Photos that do not meet the specifications are rejected by the passport division in Athens.
  • Supporting documents. Your previous passport if you have one, and a Greek police ID card or a recent certificate of municipal registration. Documents must be issued within the last six months.
  • Fees in cash. €80 from age 14 and €71 up to age 14, paid in US dollars, cash only.
  • Timing. About 4 to 5 weeks. Renewals are accepted up to one year before expiry.

Children

  • Both parents. Both parents attend unless one has legal custody. If only one parent can come, bring the other parent's written consent with a certified signature.
  • The child comes too. Children must come to the consulate, with a US passport or school ID if they have one.

  • Hair over the eyes or eyebrows
  • Tinted lenses or glare on glasses

Can I use a US 2 by 2 inch photo for a Greek passport?

No. Greece requires 4 by 6 cm, with the chin to top of forehead filling 50 to 60 percent of the photo.

How recent must the photo be?

The Greek missions in the US ask for a photo no more than a month old. The national passport rules allow up to six months, so a fresh photo is the safe choice.

A plain, light background, preferably grey, with no patterns or shadows.

Can I wear glasses?

If you usually wear glasses, wear clean, clear ones with no glare and frames that do not cover your eyes. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are only allowed for medical reasons.
